Butter beware: Unveiling the hidden risks

    2023-09-16

Prepare to be shocked and outraged as we delve into PFAS - perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS). These man-made chemicals have infiltrated our lives since the 1940s, lurking in industry and consumer products worldwide. But what exactly are PFAS, and why should we be concerned?

PFAS chemicals, also known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, have been widely used in various products such as nonstick cookware, water-repellent clothing, stain-resistant fabrics and carpets, cosmetics, firefighting foams, and grease-resistant products. These chemicals have come under scrutiny due to their potential adverse effects on human health.

The effects of PFAS exposure on our health are nothing short of alarming. Research has shown that these insidious chemicals can wreak havoc on our immune system, leaving us more susceptible to diseases and infections. Even more concerning is the impact on our children's health - increased risks of allergies and asthma in young ones can leave parents feeling helpless.

But it doesn't stop there. The long-term effects of PFAS exposure are equally disturbing. Studies have linked these chemicals to lower male fertility, cardiovascular diseases, and endocrine disruption. Our bodies were never meant to bear this burden.

The findings of a recent study sponsored by Mamavation and Environmental Health News have raised concerns about the presence of harmful PFAS chemicals in butter wrappers. The study, which tested 32 butter wrappers from 22 different brands, found that 50% of them contained fluorine, a common indicator of PFAS chemicals.

These brands had detectable levels of total fluorine: HEB Organic, Kate’s, Kerrygold, Kirkland, Maple Hill Organic, Miyokos, Organic Valley and Wegmans.
Mamvation also highlighted brands that had butter wrappers free from PFAS evidence, including 365 Whole Foods, Clover Sonoma, Horizon Organic, Nature’s Promise, Straus Family, Trader Joe’s and others.

According to a 2019 study, individuals who consume a higher amount of takeout, fast food, and pizza may have higher levels of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in their bodies compared to those who regularly cook at home. PFAS are a group of man-made chemicals commonly found in various consumer products and have been linked to adverse health effects.

This finding serves as a cautionary reminder for individuals who frequently rely on these types of food options. By understanding the potential risks associated with consuming such foods, we can make more informed choices about our diet and overall well-being.

As more research is conducted on PFAS chemicals and their impact on human health, it becomes increasingly important for regulatory agencies like the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to address these concerns and establish guidelines to protect public health. By raising awareness about this issue, we can encourage manufacturers to find safer alternatives and ensure that consumer products are free from harmful contaminants.

It's time for us to take action against this silent menace. Our health should never be compromised for convenience or profit. We must demand stricter regulations on the use of PFAS in industry and consumer products. We need transparency from manufacturers who continue to put profits before public health.

Let's raise our voices together against this chemical onslaught. It's time for change; it's time for a safer future free from the shackles of PFAS.

Why are these things not forbidden in product use? These things are being allowed deliberately and the affects on the body have been known from the beginning of their use.
