Barton Mines inducted into state's Historic Business Preservation Registry
NORTH RIVER | Sen. Dan Stec (R,C-Queensbury) presented the management and staff of Barton Mines Corporation (Barton) with a certificate inducting the company into the New York State Historic Business Preservation Registry. Stec nominated Barton for this honor, citing its lengthy history and the continued importance the company has in the region through its operations in the towns of Johnsburg and Indian Lake and the City of Glens Falls.
New York Named One of the Most Cultured States
New data has revealed the top 10 most cultured states in the U.S. The Cultural States Index, by student travel company Rustic Pathways analyzed each state against five factors: the number of National Historic Landmarks (NHLs), museums and galleries, live performance spaces, film and media sites, and literary sites. Each factor was compared against the state's population and land area (sq mi). Results for each category were converted into an overall score out of 100 to determine the ranking.
Recent Cyber Attacks Threaten Hudson Valley, New York Infrastructure
The Hudson Valley has fallen victim to a slew of cyber attacks in recent months, compromising important information from both local organizations and individuals. Cyberattack complaints in New York state increased 53% between 2016 and 2022, jumping from 16,426 incidents in 2016 to 25,112 in 2022, according to the FBI. The number of attacks targeting critical infrastructure in New York state nearly doubled to 83 in the first half of 2023 compared to 48 during the entirety of 2022 according to a report released by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli.

Governor Hochul Announces Double-Digit Declines in Shooting Incidents, Overall Reported Crime on Long Island
Governor Kathy Hochul today announced continued progress in bringing down gun violence and overall crime on Long Island. Shooting incidents with injury decreased 44 percent as reported by the Nassau, Suffolk and Hempstead Police Departments, which all participate in the State's Gun Involved Violence Elimination program. Across Long Island, statistics show a 15 percent overall decrease in index crimes, as well as a 16 percent reduction in property crimes, during the first quarter of 2024. Governor Hochul also announced the investment of more than $50 million for public safety in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, the largest such State investment in history, which was included in this year's State Budget.
