While some food trends come and go, others come back better than ever. You can certainly say this about whipped coffee, the pandemic drink trend that's returned in frozen form. How? The instant coffee base is whipped until fluffy and frozen in a separate container. TikTok is loving this 2.0 version of whipped coffee as it creates a big batch that's ready whenever you want to add a scoop or two to milk. Before you know it, the frozen base is transformed into a quick iced coffee to sip in the morning or afternoon. Read on to find out more about frozen whipped coffee and a simple recipe to make in advance.

    What is whipped coffee?

Whipped coffee (also called Dalgona coffee) is a mixture of instant coffee, sugar and water that's whipped and then served over milk. This drink was popularized by a South Korean actor named Jung Il-woo who had it at a restaurant in Macau, China. The taste and appearance of this frothy drink resembled dalgona, a South Korean honeycomb toffee. So, the drink became known as "Dalgona coffee" and it features a sweet yet strong flavor that becomes balanced once it's combined with milk.

The frozen twist to this viral favorite

The global success of this drink came during the pandemic in 2020 as videos of social media users making it went viral. Fast forward to today, whipped coffee is having a resurgence — but this time many home cooks are freezing it to enjoy later.

TikTok creator Ethan Rode ( @ethanrodecoffee ) is to thank for putting frozen whipped coffee on the map as a time-saving way to bulk prep this java topping. Freezing whipped coffee gives it a consistency that he likens to ice cream, which helps keep the drink cold. Whenever you're ready to serve it, simply scoop your desired amount into a glass of milk with ice and stir it well. Watch his viral video to see this process unfold.
