I Tried the New ‘Besties’ Collab From Oreo and and Coca-Cola: Here’s My Honest Review

    By Isabelle Paquette,

The snack aisle at the grocery store is always difficult to pass up. But soon, those shelves will hold something you definitely won’t want to miss. When I first heard that Coca-Cola and OREO were teaming up for a new flavor collaboration, I was equal parts excited and curious. These two iconic brands, each with its own distinct and beloved flavor, are now merging into new creations. How could that work? But as a self-proclaimed snack enthusiast, I knew I had to try these limited-edition goodies for myself. Here’s what to know about the “Besties” Coca-Cola Oreo collab and my honest review.

What is the Coca-Cola Oreo collab?

According to Coca-Cola® and the OREO® brand, friendship is magic. And now, fans will get to taste that connection for themselves with unique, unexpected flavor experiences. Slated for release on September 9, 2024, the limited-time “Besties” collaboration includes two standout products: the Oreo Coca-Cola Sandwich Cookies and the Coca-Cola Oreo Zero Sugar soda. It comes as the latest drop from Coca-Cola Creations.

Both brands are leaning heavily into the “Besties” theme. In an official statement , Oana Vlad, Coca-Cola Company’s Global Vice President of Brand Strategy, said, “At the end of the day, our mutual commitment to product quality and technical excellence—and our willingness to have fun and work together as one team—made this possible.”

Eugenia Zalis, Global Head of Marketing and Brand for OREO, Mondelez International, echoed the sentiment: “We cannot wait to see the reaction to the campaign and hope fans are excited to experience the latest twists on two classics.”

Per limited edition, the products are available while supplies last. But if you simply can’t wait, you can order through presale this month at Walmart.com (register on Oreo’s website ).

Products and experiences from the Coca-Cola Oreo collab

So, what exactly do you get with this “Besties” collab? First up is the Oreo Coca-Cola Sandwich Cookie, with a unique red, white and black color scheme inspired by Coke’s iconic palette. According to the statement, it “features two signature chocolate base cakes paired with a Coca‑Cola taste, embossed with Coca‑Cola designs with a smooth white-colored creme, and studded with red edible glitter.” But the real surprise? Popping candies that mimic that familiar fizzy sensation.

On the flip side, there’s the Coca-Cola Oreo Zero Sugar soda, which promises the refreshing taste of Coca-Cola blended with subtle, “OREO cookie-inspired hints.”

But there's more to this dynamic duo than just a tasty snack. The collab also includes both digital and live experiences designed for best friends. Fans can scan on-pack QR codes and activate “Bestie Mode” for custom merged playlists on Spotify. And in person, we can expect some fun live moments, as well as a line of merchandise sold at Forever 21. The collection will include everything from clothing to notebooks, all under $20. A slushy version of the new Zero Sugar drink will also land in select 7-Eleven locations.

Now, for the moment of truth—how do these products actually taste? First of all, I want to shout out the unique packaging. It’s sleek, bold and honors the iconic insignia of both brands.

Starting with the Oreo Coca-Cola Sandwich Cookie, I have to say, it was a delightful surprise. It tasted and smelled like Coca-Cola syrup, but I appreciated that it wasn’t overpowering. As for that carbonated twist, they definitely delivered. It almost felt like pop rocks when I bit into it, which is great if you’re looking for a textural contrast. At some point, however, it did feel a bit grainy. While the original Oreo will always have my heart, I still enjoyed this cookie.

As for the Coca-Cola Oreo Zero Sugar soda, this one caught me off guard. There wasn’t a distinct “cookie” smell when I opened it. I found the cookie flavor subtle and more of an aftertaste—but it was there. It tasted more like the creme filling than chocolate, like a vanilla-flavored Coke . However, it pairs well with the smooth, slightly tangy taste of Coke Zero. While I may not be a big fan of dessert-like drinks, this is definitely worth trying if you do, or just for the experience.
