Netflix’s ‘Nobody Wants This’ Is Reviving the Rom Com Genre—Here’s Why

Romantic comedies have been around for ages, spiking in popularity in the 80s through the early 2000s. But as the 2000s continued, there was a lull in rom coms, those that followed failing to live up to the expectations of the genre. But recently the Netflix series Nobody Wants This was released, and many have said it has brought the rom com back to life.

Starring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody, Nobody Wants This follows podcast host Joanne, as she attempts to conquer the dating scene. When she meets the newly single rabbi, Noah Roklov, Joanne is conflicted on how to navigate the tricky relationship.

Bell is widely known for her time starring on Veronica Mars from 2004 to 2019 and for narrating Gossip Girl from 2007 to 2012. She was also the voice of Anna in the 2013 Disney movie Frozen . Meanwhile, Brody is best known for portraying Seth Cohen on the 2003 series The O.C. , as well as for his time on Gilmore Girls .

One of the most-debated topics about Gilmore Girls is which team are you when it comes to the guys of Stars Hollow. Do you prefer the bad guy with a sensitive heart, like Jess and Tristan? Or is it a sweet boy, like Dean, who you root for? Whether you like one of them more […]

When the comedic duo came together to star as the unlikely couple, they brought a fresh perspective and undeniable chemistry to the rom com genre. And all of it is thanks to series creator Erin Foster, who loosely based the show on a romance from her own life.

Foster’s husband Simon Tikhman practices Judaism, and the couple went through a situation similar to Noah and Joanne’s. “ The emotional journey, I would say, is very accurate to my experience of meeting my husband,” Foster explained.

Foster, who is the daughter of record producer David Foster, was faced with the decision to convert to Judaism, just like the show’s main character was. She ultimately decided to convert, something we haven’t yet seen for Bell’s Joanne.

Erin wrote a very interesting rom-com that had a lot of depth and that was very modern,” Bell says. “Just the fact that she chose it to be this agnostic podcast host and a sort of unconventional rabbi, people who are sort of star-crossed, people who want to be together but shouldn't when the world is against them … there's inherently a lot of story behind that.”

The O.C is the place with some of our favorite early 2000s couples — notably Ryan and Marissa and Seth and Summer — and it turns out those couples were real off-screen, too! Why everybody wants ‘Nobody Wants This’

There are a few things that makes ‘Nobody Wants This’ so enjoyable. The most important factor is the undeniable chemistry between Bell and Brody’s characters. Their ever-present banter and ability to understand one another makes for an adorable pairing. There’s also the fact that Bell and Brody have a great personal connection.

Adam can stare longingly into someone’s eyes for an extended period of time — and so can I. And, not to burst everyone’s bubble, but [the on-screen connection comes from] the math of that, the anticipation of that.”

Brody shared that he enjoys this genre and that this show was a good one to become a part of. “Not only do I like watching romantic comedies, I like performing them,” he explained. "It’s a very fun space to play in as a performer—at least for myself. I thought Erin had a really fresh and funny take on it.”

And as for that show-stopping first kiss? Brody shared that there wasn’t much to go on when bringing that moment to life.

All I can say is , in the script, it says something to the effect of ‘ the greatest kiss of all time ,’” he explained, with Bell adding, “I think what’s clear to both of us is that the butterflies and the heart palpitations live in the anticipation; the lead-up is so much more romantic than the actual kiss.”

Foster seems to be all in for a second season as well. She said, “ We’re getting a really positive response . And so, I think the conversations have definitely started to happen about a potential season 2… I mean, I want my show to be on the air as long as possible!”
