FISHERS, Ind. – Someone used a Fishers fire station’s baby box to surrender a newborn.

According to the Fishers Fire Department, the newborn was left at Station 397, 15109 E 136th St.

“Upon receiving the surrendered infant, our firefighters from Station 397 acted swiftly and provided the necessary medical attention and care,” the department said in a Monday Facebook post about the incident. “The baby is now under the watchful care of Children and Family Services, ensuring the highest standards of health and safety.”

Indiana’s Safe Haven Law allows for the anonymous surrender of an infant 30 days old or younger without prosecution. The infants may be left at fire departments, hospitals, emergency medical services stations or one of Indiana’s 130 Safe Haven baby boxes.

“As long as there are no signs of intentional abuse on the baby, no information is required of the person leaving the baby,” according to the state’s website about the Safe Haven Law.

A baby box allows someone to anonymously surrender a newborn. It’s installed in the exterior wall of a designated location; the box will lock automatically after the infant is placed inside and has an alarm system to alert officials.

“Thank you to the parents who surrendered this newborn and entrusted the Fishers Fire & Emergency Services firefighters to help in your time of need,” the department wrote in the post. “Your baby is safe and healthy.”
