I-17 will be closed nightly in Flagstaff through Friday. Here's what to know

A bridge replacement on the Interstate 17 in Flagstaff will cause nightly closures for both lanes of traffic until Friday, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

From Wednesday until Friday, the I-17 will be closed each night from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. in both directions at the John Wesley Powell Boulevard interchange, just west of the Flagstaff Pulliam Airport.

The new bridge is part of an upgrade to the interchange that connects the airport, John Wesley Powell Boulevard, and Fort Tuthill County Park to I-17, according to ADOT.

Drivers should expect nightly delays as both lanes of traffic will be forced to exit at John Wesly Powell Boulevard, with frequent stops expected as police and flaggers will guide detoured traffic.

The speed limit in the area will be reduced to 35 mph and only right turns are permitted on the interchange. Vehicles needed to be under 10 feet wide to use the exit and entrance ramps that will lead drivers back to the I-17, ADOT said.

Northbound drivers can access eastside State Route 89A and Fort Tuthill County Park by exiting at McConnell Drive and heading to southbound I-17 to access the interchange.

Southbound drivers can access westside Flagstaff Pulliam Airport by the I-17 southbound to Kachina Boulevard, then northbound I-17 to the interchange.

The bridge will be closed to pedestrians and bicyclists throughout the remainder of construction on the interchange, ADOT noted, recommending detours at Sheep's Crossing underpass about half a mile north of the interchange.
