Going deep on CFAC
Going deep is an essential next step in order for Columbia Falls and Flathead County residents to begin to really understand and raise meaningful questions about the proposed leave-the-toxic waste-in-place cleanup plan for the Columbia Falls Aluminum Company (CFAC) Superfund site. And going deep is exactly what the Coalition for a Clean CFAC is busy doing now thanks to recent support funding for consultants to help us tract down and better understand the complex data that is buried within some 10,000 pages of technical documents, which are the supporting studies for this proposed cleanup plan. As Matt Dorrington, the Environmental Protection...

In a Nutshell: Everyone deserves to eat the rainbow
On summer Sundays, my two year old daughter eats her lunch directly from the garden. We spend our mornings at the Whitefish Community Garden and she waters our bed with her tiny red watering can. Then she embarks on an adventure collecting her own spinach, dinosaur kale and a sand bucket full of snap peas. “Mama, open these.” She finishes her lunch with a handful of eversweet strawberries. Prior to harvest season, she never wanted to eat vegetables. Now she loves her greens. I am hopeful that one day, all kids can experience delicious, local fresh food this way. However, staggering...
Law roundup: Visitors leave the state, ditching friend at jail
A 26-year-old man leaving the Flathead County Detention Center reportedly wanted to “charge his friends for abandoning him” when they took off to Wisconsin, leaving him stranded at the county jail. An old tan or gold minivan reportedly drove past a woman mowing her lawn about five or six times before stopping in front of her house. The driver allegedly asked her peculiar questions such as, “Are you a lawnmower for a living?” “Are you the [home]owner?” Apparently, he needed to drive around the block one more time before working up the courage to proposition her. A property owner calling...
