Armed shoplifting suspect picks up robbery charge
Allegedly threatening employees of a big box retailer with a knife while shoplifting in Kalispell last week has earned a 31-year-old man a felony charge. Flathead Electric Co-op members surpass $5 million mark in giving to Roundup for Safety
Flathead Electric Co-op's member giving program this spring exceeded $5 million in contributions. In 1997, Flathead Electric Cooperative doubled down on its guiding business principle of “concern for community” and launched a program to improve safety in its service area. The co-op dubbed it Roundup for Safety and appointed a board to get the program off the ground. Next, cooperative members volunteered to allow their electric bills to be rounded up to support community safety projects. For example, a bill of $55.01 or $55.99 is rounded up to $56. CASA volunteers sworn in
Five community members have been sworn in as CASA/GAL volunteers. Each will work as a Court Appointed Special Advocate/ Guardian ad Litem for abused and neglected children in the Flathead County foster care system. District Court Judge Heidi Ulbricht presided over the ceremony last month and administered the oath. Each new advocate received a certificate for the 56 hours of training they completed. The training covers topics such as the CASA/GAL role, child development, substance abuse disorders, domestic violence, assessing family strengths, the court process, laws relating to abuse/neglect, cultural diversity, interviewing, and how to write reports to the court. In 2023, 155 children with 91 advocates in Flathead County were served by CASA for Kids. CASA's goal is to assign an advocate for every abused/neglected child who enters the foster care system within 30 days.Applications are being accepted for the next training cycle, which starts in September 2024. Vaguely wordedA letter to the editor June 20 stated that the Supreme Court allowed bump stocks to be legal. This is incorrect. The Court determined that bump stocks were not machine guns as defined by federal law passed by Congress. Their verdict is that the president and the executive branch cannot make something illegal without the express laws from Congress. So technically bump stocks are legal at this time until Congress rules them illegal. This is what should have been done already.
