Schoolgirl, 12, shot dead as she slept in her bed

A 12-year-old girl has been shot dead as she slept in bed amid a surge in gun violence in Flint, Michigan .

Trinity Davis was killed late on Tuesday when she was shot at a home on the 4700 block of Canterbury Lane around the junction between Clio and Pierson roads.

Police are attributing the upswing in violence to gang activities. It's seen four young people including Trinity killed in three weeks in the city's north side.

Describing the shocking killing, Flint Police Chief Terence Green said: "She was asleep in her bed, then was awakened by a bullet that pierced her body. It can't get much worse than that. The problem is, if no one is going to step forward that has information to help and bring justice to Trinity, then you are not a human being, I consider."

Her family and others who knew Trinity have been left heartbroken and have urged an end to this wave of violence must end, ABC12 reports.

Michael Clack, a teacher who taught Trinity, said: "She was very lively, very vibrant, never a boring moment with her. It is just very sad this is not the first nor the second nor the 10th of my students that have met their fate."

Flint police have stated that she wasn't the intended victim during the shooting in the early morning hours of Wednesday, in a house near the Flint Police Department mini-station on the north side of the city.

"It was pretty difficult being here last night. A lot of people crying, very emotional," Clack expressed. "We have to keep our teens, our kids under control and let them know this is not the way. This is not the thing to do. Violence is never the answer."

This comes amid a spate of killings. On June 25, two 17 year old boys were victims of a shooting on Hilton Lane in the Beecher area. One of the boys, Khamani Lindsey, succumbed to his injuries while the other survived with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

An 18 year old man has been apprehended by the Mt. Morris Township Police Department in relation to the deadly double shooting on Hilton Lane.

In another incident, two teenagers were shot and killed inside a residence on Banbury Place in Flint during the early morning hours of June 26. The victims were identified as 15-year-old Dom Ward and 13-year-old Dontavis Moore.

An arrest has been made in connection with the Banbury Place double homicide, but the suspect's identity remains undisclosed as they have not yet appeared in court for arraignment.

"These shootings we are investigating as gang-related on both cases with Trinity last night, and the 13 and 15-year-old that were shot," Green stated.

Green expressed deep concern over the number and youth of the victims caught in a recent spate of violence.

"They are innocent victims -- babies -- asleep on the couch or in their bed. That was the case of Trinity last night," Green lamented. "There were five within the last two to three weeks. That's a lot. They haven't even lived. Flint school kids, when they return to school in the next couple of weeks, will miss their school year because of gun violence."

In the wake of a shooting at a residence on Flint's north side, community leaders like Clack and Flint City Councilwoman Tonya Burns arrived to offer support to the grieving family. Burns highlighted the urgent need for action.

"These youngsters went to the same school as the other youngsters were unfortunately killed and gunned down on Banbury Place," Burns pointed out. "These types of shootings create retaliation. And it keeps happening, so we know it's happening. What are we doing about it?"
