A Stonecrester was arrested with illicit drugs after a traffic stop in The Villages. John Stepanik Jr., 56, who lives in the 55+ gated community in Summerfield, was driving a silver passenger car shortly before midnight Friday in the vicinity of Dustin Drive and Sharon Drive on the Historic Side of The Villages when he was pulled over for an inoperable headlight, according to an arrest report from the Lady Lake Police Department.

Polk Pre-Collegiate Academy in Winter Haven ceases operations for coming year
Polk Pre-Collegiate Academy, a charter school based in Winter Haven, will not operate for the coming school year, Polk County Public Schools has confirmed. “Our staff is reaching out to the impacted students and families and will help place them in our schools as needed,” PCPS spokesperson Jason Geary said in an email. “We are glad to assist families and get them situated before school resumes; it is estimated that 40 or fewer students will be impacted by this closure.”

Summer slump felt as jobless rates rise in region
The jobless rate in the CareerSource Citrus Levy Marion region was 4.5% in June, up 0.7 percentage point over the month and 0.5 percentage point greater than the region’s year ago rate of 4.0%. The labor force was 219,052, down 1,219 (-0.6%) over the year. There were 9,947 unemployed residents in the region, an increase of 1,602 compared to May and up 1,143 over the year.
