Batteries caused huge fires in Brooklyn & Queens, FDNY says
NEW YORK -- A massive house fire in Brooklyn and a huge barge fire in Queens this week were caused by lithium-ion batteries, FDNY investigators determined.Over 170 fires in New York City have been blamed on lithium-ion batteries so far in 2024, according to the fire department. Chief Fire Marshal Dan Flynn said Thursday the raging house fire Monday in Ocean Hill was traced back to a scooter being stored inside. "Discovered on the third floor, our fire marshal determined that this lithium-ion battery was an electric standup scooter," said Flynn. The fire on Dean Street left nine people hurt and 30 homeless....

Dr. Iván Guzmán, a civil engineering professor at the New York City College of Technology in Brooklyn, New York, is one of 32 faculty and staff members from Hispanic-Serving Institutions and Hispanic-Serving School Districts around the nation that make up the 2024 class of E. Kika De La Garza Fellows.

Oyster Bay sophomore named to the USA Fencing All-American Team
What started as a fun after-school activity quickly became Luke Kugler’s passion. Kugler thought the sport was akin to sword fighting when he started fencing at age 10. Now, the Oyster Bay High School sophomore is a member of the 2023-2024 USA Fencing High School All-American Team. The All-American Program is made up of USA Fencing members who display strong athletic and academic skill.

The buses are rolling and soon children will be returning to their classrooms. Children with cancer are unable to attend school due to severely compromised immune systems, so they will be home schooled or tutored in-patient. Throughout the summer the Sarah Grace Foundation for Children With Cancer has been sending crafts and activities to local pediatric cancer centers and recently provided new backpacks and school supplies to seven pediatric cancer centers as part of their ‘back to school’ program. Foundation efforts were made possible through the collection of school supplies by Marcie and her team at Ray Leventhal Clothing in Plainview, the Hicksville Chamber of Commerce and by a generous donation from the Hicksville-Jericho Rotary Club.

35-year-old motorcyclist in critical condition after falling off bridge in Rockaway Beach
