FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) — The Florence Police Department (FPD) has announced that Mike Holt has been named its new chief of police.

A police department spokesperson said Monday that the Florence Civil Service Board promoted Holt, formerly a deputy chief, to chief of police. Florence Mayor Andy Betterton said the promotion is effective immediately.

The appointment comes after former Chief Ron Tyler announced his retirement in April. Tyler was originally selected as chief in May of 2012 and his last day as chief was on June 28.

Holt began his career in law enforcement with the FPD in 1996 and also has experience as an instructor at Northwest Shoals Community College and the University of North Alabama.

Betterton said Holt is well-equipped to handle the demands of his new position.

Holt said he is thankful for the opportunity to serve the department and the city.

“I am grateful and honored for the opportunity to lead the men and women of the Florence Police Department into our next chapter,” he said.

An FPD spokesperson said the department expresses its best wishes for his future service to the community.
