Thirteen middle schoolers and two teachers from San Tan Charter School in Gilbert recently spent a morning taking a two-hour tour of Toggenburg Goats of Arizona in Florence.

As middle school teacher Megan Hubbard noted, after several of her students inquired about having more farm animals at the school – San Tan is home to chickens and some class pets — she and her students discussed and researched goats and proposed visiting a goat farm.

After several of Hubbard’s students spent time researching and calling local goat farms, the middle schoolers decided to visit Toggenburg Goats of Arizona. During the tour, the students asked the owners a number of questions about goat care, off-grid living and sustainability.

“Bob and Suzanne Eaton from the goat farm were so impressed by the students’ efforts that they offered to give us two goats,” Hubbard said.

“We were able to learn about everything involved with baby goats and meet some of the babies that were only a week old. This trip was completely arranged by the students, and I am so proud of their efforts.”
