The U.S. is all too familiar with the chaos left in the path of a hurricane. Hurricane Beryl became a Category 5 hurricane, threatening the state of Florida (specifically near Palm Beach County). Though meteorologists predict the hurricane may not impact the U.S. at all, there is always a possibility that pressure changes may alter the path of a hurricane. For Floridians, these news titles are not nearly as scary as they may have been at one point, but that’s only because they’re experienced with these types of weather events.
The FEMA Hurricane Risk Rating is “very high” in the coastal cities of Florida and throughout the south and east coasts. FEMA doesn’t just track hurricanes. It also tracks 17 other natural hazards, including strong winds, coastal flooding, and tsunamis. With natural hazards, there is an expected annual loss. Not only are buildings affected, but so is agriculture, and all local people, whether they live in the area, do business in the area, or both.
The hurricane risk dataset was designed by FEMA for intended users to have the transparency they need to plan ahead. Homeowners need this education as they’re responsible for their mortgage and home insurance should a disaster strike. Businesses in areas with a high hurricane risk must consider hazard mitigation plans and emergency plans to protect their employees and assets. The local government uses the data to update codes and ensure community recovery.
To determine the cities with the highest hurricane risk, 24/7 Tempo reviewed data on natural hazard risk for U.S. census tracts from the March 2023 FEMA National Risk Index dataset. Cities were ranked based on the average hurricane risk index score for all census tracts within their borders. Data were aggregated from the census tract level to the city level using spatial boundary definitions from the U.S. Census Bureau’s TIGER/Line program . Supplemental data on the total value of all owner-occupied homes and population are from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey . Only places with at least 25,000 residents were considered.
