It Is Going to Be Over 115 Degrees in This Retirement Hot Spot This Weekend

    By Tracy Farnsworth,

Across the nation, soaring temperatures make it hard to enjoy any time outside. Retirees move to new cities and towns for warmer temperatures, a lower cost of living, and recreational areas to keep them active and social. It’s hard to enjoy retirement when it’s too hot to go out. Several retirement hot spots will feel hotter than 100 degrees this weekend.

Many cities in the U.S. have shattered long-standing records for hottest temperatures. Summer isn’t over yet. We still have the rest of July and August for the heat to continue. Look at the all-time records for “Highest Max Temperature” on NOAA, U.S. records have been broken 30 times and tied 49 times so far this July. How many are popular retirement cities?

While people are working longer and retiring later in life, 66.9% of Americans over the age of 64 retired. Pew Research Center also found that the percentage reached 50.3% for adults 55 or older. Not everyone who retires is of retirement age as some are quitting the workforce sooner than expected figuring that life’s too short.

AARP’s retirement report found more than 338,000 retirees moved to a new home in 2023. Lifestyle and quality of healthcare remain top reasons for a move. Retirees think of warmer weather and plenty of sunny days, but excessive heat isn’t something that crosses the mind as you enter retirement.

Retirement is a time to embrace new hobbies, spend time with loved ones, and enjoy a relaxed daily schedule. Yet, this summer’s more about staying inside and keeping cool to avoid heat exhaustion. (Before exploring the retirement hot spots where it’s going to be over 100 degrees, read “ Excessive Heat Is Threatening These Major Cities Right Now .”)

    Methodology:

To determine the major cities where it is going to feel over 100 degrees this weekend, 24/7 Tempo reviewed data on heat index forecasts from the NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Prediction . Cities were ranked based on the average forecasted heat index maximum for July 19-21, 2024. Data was aggregated from points to cities using Voronoi tessellation and place boundaries from the U.S. Census Bureau’s TIGER/Line program. Only cities with at least 150,000 residents were considered. Only cities with at least 10,000 residents where at least 40% of residents are 65 years and over were considered. Population data is from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey and are five-year estimates for 2022.
