(The Center Square) — Florida's Republican U.S. House members on Sunday called on President Joe Biden to immediately resign after he announced he was no longer running for reelection but would finish the remainder of his term.

Rep. Carlos Gimenez, a Cuban American from Miami, said in a post on X, "Now that we know that President Biden has decided not to seek his party's nomination, he's got to resign also," he said. "Everybody is seeing his cognitive decline. It didn't just start a year ago. It started about three years ago, that's why he hid in the basement. … He doesn't have the capacity to be president of the United States and our enemies are seeing this and this put America at risk. … He is not fit to serve as our Commander in Chief."

Fellow Cuban American from Miami, Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar, agreed, saying in a post on X , "Democrat elites led a four-year cover-up to hide from the American people President Biden's failing mental faculties. Today those same elites have successively forced Biden off the ballot, because he no longer served their only goal: staying in power."

Rep. Greg Steube also said in a post on X , "The White House has been lying to the American people about Joe Biden's mental and physical state for years. The debate was so bad that even the media and elected Democrats can't deny it any longer. They are scrambling because they know their seats are at risk."

U.S. Navy veteran Steube joins fellow military veterans, Reps. Brian Mast, Cory Mills, Anna Paulina Luna, Neal Dunn and Mike Waltz, who argue Biden remaining in office raises additional national security concerns and he's unfit to be commander in chief.

Mast, an Army veteran who was severely injured in Afghanistan, said in a post on X , "Unfit to stand trial. Unfit to run. Unfit to be president for 1 more second."

Mills, an Army combat veteran, said in a post on X Biden should resign because he "admitted it himself, he can't handle two jobs at once. He's not mentally or physically fit to run for office, let alone continue as president. We've seen crisis after crisis ignored whether it's his catastrophic border policies, economic failures or foreign affairs disasters. He's violated his oath to faithfully execute the office of president … … Every day he continues to sit in the White House as a threat to our national security."

Luna, an Air Force veteran, said in a post on X , "there was a cover-up regarding Biden's health. … The House will never get the tapes in time. This is a national security crisis."

She's referring to special counsel recordings of Biden which indicate mental decline. If made public, the cabinet would be forced to remove Biden through the 25 Amendment, she's argued on X .

U.S. Sen. Rick Scott, R-Florida, said he was introducing a resolution in the Senate to invoke the 25th Amendment after U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, did.

Dunn, an Army veteran, said in a post on X , "Biden admits he is not fit for office. Dems pushed him off the ticket in an attempt to replace him with someone better. It doesn't matter who runs, the liberal agenda has been disastrous for America."

Waltz, the first U.S. Army Green Beret to be elected to Congress, said in a post on X , "If President Biden isn't fit to run for re-election, he isn't fit to continue as commander-in-chief. He should resign. We are in a period of maximum danger with a wide-open southern border and the world on fire."

Biden made the announcement after dozens of Democrats called on him to drop out after his disastrous June 27 presidential debate in which he could not complete sentences and appeared disoriented. After Republicans again sounded the alarm, several media outlets accused them of using "cheap fakes," Waltz said on X. "Reminder. It was just 3 weeks ago we were being accused of launching 'cheap fakes' about Biden's health."

Steube expressed concerns about the Democratic process, saying on X, "Kamala has not been on a single ballot in any state for the office of president. Democrat elites will nominate Biden's successor behind closed doors that not a single Democrat in America has voted for…. So much for the party of 'democracy'!"

Waltz raised a similar concern in a post on X, saying "a group of rich liberal elites just vetoed the votes of 14 million Americans." Speaking to Democrats, he said, "Don't EVER lecture people about 'democracy' again."

Salazar agreed, saying on X that "Biden is the legitimate candidate who won the Democrat's primary process; But, Democrat elites don't care about the will of the people … they have the nerve to accuse the Republicans of being a threat to American democracy. What hypocrites!

"What happens within the Democratic Party is a crucial part of the American electoral system and it affects us all. Over the last four years, the Democrat social and economic policies have destroyed this country. You can replace the candidate, but it won't change the facts. The American people will vote to reject the failed democratic agenda regardless of who their mouthpiece is."

Rep. Kat Cammack also said Biden should resign and raised concerns about the democratic process. "Americans from coast to coast are rightfully furious at the Democratic Party elites for undermining the democratic process and not allowing millions of voters a voice in who their party's nominee is. … this is wrong and un-American," she said on X.

Rep. Matt Gaetz asked Democrats on X who claimed Biden won the June 27 presidential debate, "why did the winner just drop out?"
