Summer is here in full swing. July is one of the hottest months of the year in most parts of the United States. Some vacation spots easily reach over 100°F, making it a perfect time to hit the beach, spring, pool, or lake for a refreshing time.
Before you start planning your weekend getaway, you should probably find out which vacation cities and spots offer the hottest weather. This is good information to know if you’re looking to sport a tan or want to avoid the heat as much as possible. One state with plenty of cities, mainly coastal, that see 100-degree weather constantly is Florida. Is this even surprising? Florida is called the Sunshine State for a reason. Florida is also a rainy state, but don’t let the rain fool you. The short thunderstorms in Florida only really increase the humidity, making it feel even hotter. Two other states on our list are also no surprise: Arizona and Alabama. Both states are known for their hot summer weather, but which cities will experience weather over 100 degrees? Can you name any on our list? Who knows, maybe your hometown made it.
Methodology
To determine the popular vacation spots where it’s going to feel over 100 degrees this weekend, 24/7 Tempo reviewed data on heat index forecasts from the NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Prediction . Cities were ranked based on the average forecasted heat index maximum for July 19 to 21, 2024. Data was aggregated from points to cities using Voronoi tessellation and place boundaries from the U.S. Census Bureau’s TIGER/Line program. Only cities where at least 25% of the housing stock is vacant for seasonal, recreational, or occasional use – a proxy for vacation activity – with at least 5,000 residents were considered. Data on population and vacancy status is from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey and are five-year estimates for 2022.
