Tallahassee, FL - Florida Governor Ron DeSantis held a press conference in Tallahassee on Sunday to address the impending landfall of Hurricane Debby.

The governor compared Debby’s path to that of Hurricane Idalia from August 2023, but noted that Debby entered the Big Bend region with more intensity, boasting maximum sustained winds of 120 mph compared to Idalia’s 80 mph.

The storm has caused significant storm surge and flooding across the state, initially impacting Southwest Florida.

Approximately 143,000 residents were without power due to the hurricane.

Governor DeSantis urged Floridians to stay off the roads, warning that flooded streets pose serious dangers to motorists.

He also highlighted that the Florida Department of Transportation is working around the clock in 24-hour shifts to provide assistance during the storm.

Additionally, other state government departments are prepared to support residents throughout the hurricane's duration.

DeSantis concluded with a crucial safety reminder: those using generators should not operate them inside their homes to avoid the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
