Lee Health is evaluating its business structure

Lee Health has undertaken an evaluation of its business structure to determine whether returning to a community focused nonprofit structure from its current structure as a special district/ government nonprofit would be beneficial for the residents of Lee County. In late February, the Lee Health Board of Directors and leadership team received the results of a months-long evaluation conducted by health care management and consulting firm Kaufman Hall.

The report lays out many possible benefits to conversion, as well as some financial implications, but the report’s overall finding is essentially that Lee Health should continue the conversion process. As a result of studying and analyzing the report, Lee Health’s leadership team presented the recommendation of moving forward with conversion to the Board of Directors. The leadership team believes that converting would:

    • Protect Lee Health’s financial health, independence and community structure long-term, and

    • Fuel Lee Health’s continued national leadership in health care, and

    • Ensure Lee Health’s ability to provide a full array of high-quality care and services to the residents of Lee

County, regardless of their ability to pay.

There will be a public hearing at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 25, in the Community Room at Gulf Coast Medical Center. The Lee Health Board of Directors invites the public to share their thoughts about the evaluation currently underway and whether the interests of the residents of the community are best served by converting the health system to a community focused nonprofit structure. Residents of Lee County are invited to attend this public hearing.
