In celebration of its 40th anniversary, Harry Chapin Food Bank, the largest in Southwest Florida, continues its impactful mission, feeding over 250,000 people monthly. On July 24, the food bank hosted participants from the Mandela Washington Fellowship Institute for Young African Leaders for a special food packing event.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship is the flagship program of the U.S. government’s Young African Leaders Initiative, involving nearly 6,500 young leaders from sub-Saharan Africa since 2014. These accomplished Fellows, aged 25 to 35, promote innovation and positive impact in their communities.

At Harry Chapin, the Fellows learned about the food bank’s mission and prepared 500 meal kits, each providing 15 nutritious meals. These kits are part of the mobile pantry program, which serves children, families, and seniors.

“This is an incredible opportunity to highlight the impact a small group of dedicated individuals can make in their community,” said Richard LeBer, President and CEO of Harry Chapin Food Bank. “Together, we can work to end hunger and ensure everyone has access to healthy and nutritious food.”

During their U.S. stay, the Fellows participate in Leadership Institutes focusing on business, civic engagement, or public management. Hosted by colleges nationwide, these institutes, including FGCU’s Civic Engagement Institute, help Fellows develop leadership skills applicable in their home countries.
