Foley retirement community expands efforts to help veterans

FOLEY, Ala. (WKRG) — Members of a retirement community in Foley are expanding their efforts to recognize veterans’ sacrifice and need your help.

Out of nearly the roughly 475 residents that live at the Grove, 18% of them are US Veterans and homeowners here say they’re a very important part of this community.

The Grove Veteran’s Group helped get funding for this memorial at the front of the complex.
They recently formed a non-profit foundation to raise more money to add more bricks to the memorial as well as a large granite monument.

The foundation allows them to try and raise money beyond the people who already live here.

“The Grove community has donated quite a bit of money, and there’s only so much money that can go around,” said Grove Veteran’s Group Commander Jeff Fish. Members say they appreciate the sacrifice of vets and value them as members of the Grove.

“They bring a whole different mindset to the table when we’re planning events for the residents here,” said former Grover Social Director Dawn Lucas. “Just gives you such a closeness. And the community is close in general, but it just makes us more like family.”

They have ceremonies for veterans every year. In addition to growing the memorial they also want to use the foundation to help support veterans with needs they may have like transportation to medical appointments. They hope to raise the money they need for the memorial improvements in the next eight months.
