(FOX40.COM) — An inmate homicide investigation is underway at the California State Prison, Sacramento in Folsom after an attack on an inmate on Sunday, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR).

At 9:10 a.m. three prisoners were seen attacking a lone inmate and forced prison staff to use pepper spray and an “instantaneous blast grenade” to get control over the inmates.

Inmate Randy Schlaepfer, 55, was found to have sustained multiple stab wounds from the attack and was pronounced dead at 9:46 a.m. by Folsom Fire Department personnel.

Investigators found two “inmate-manufactured” weapons at the scene of the stabbing.

The three men found to be involved in the stabbing were Gregory Roach, 35, Ronald Ricks, 38 and Gregg Reynolds, 46.

Schlaepfer was serving a double life sentence with the possibility of parole for a 1995 second-degree murder charge and a 2015 charge for assaulting a prisoner with a deadly weapon likely to cause great bodily injury.

Roach and Ricks are facing life sentences with the possibility of parole and Reynolds was sentenced to life without parole for first-degree murder.
