FOND DU LAC – The Green Bay Packers Foundation has awarded a $250,000 matching grant to the Dr. George E. Koonce Scholars Program.

The program is intended to make a college degree possible for low-income students.

Koonce started the Koonce Scholars Program a year ago at Marian University in Fond du Lac to offer a way for students from minority and underserved communities to obtain a college degree, with both financial and academic support.

Koonce brings students from economically challenged areas on trips to Lambeau Field to show them the people working behind the scenes contribute to the success of the Packers' organization. Students also learn about Marian University’s academic programs and athletics, including support services.

The Packers Foundation’s Impact Grants are awarded to organizations that focus on a variety of community needs. For more information or to donate toward the matching grant, visit marianuniversity.edu.

Free performance of Shakespeare’s ‘Henry IV’ set for July 12

The Starling Shakespeare Company will give a free preformance of “Henry IV” July 12. Sponsored by Thrasher Opera House, the performance begins at 6 p.m. at Deacon Mills Park.

A news release explains: Shakespeare’s “Henry IV” is a historical play that follows the tumultuous reign of King Henry IV of England and the coming-of-age of his son, Prince Hal. The play is divided into two parts and juxtaposes the political machinations of the king, who struggles to maintain his throne amid rebellion and civil war, with the youthful exploits of Prince Hal. Hal, initially perceived as a wayward prince because of his association with the roguish Sir John Falstaff, ultimately matures and steps into his role as heir apparent.

With only five actors, Starling’s shows are fast-paced, nimble interpretations, and last around 90 minutes. Take chairs or blankets for seating.
