    Things to do in Fond du Lac this weekend include Gottfried’s annual Prairie Fest and One Night of Queen

    FOND DU LAC – Families looking for entertainment this week can have some fun while learning about nature during Prairie Fest or play games at the Eden Volunteer Firemen’s Picnic.

    Two free concerts will be offered outdoors at Thelma this week: Throwback Stereo and One night of Queen.

    And, if you’re looking for some artistic treasures, check out Waupun’s Art and Craft Fair.

    Gottfried hosts annual Prairie Fest Aug. 3

    Gottfried Prairie and Arboretum will host its annual celebration of nature, Prairie Fest, from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 3. Gottfried is at 400 University Drive.

    The free event offers family activities and environmental education and a monarch butterfly release.

    The day begins with a bird hike at 8 a.m., followed by a yoga session.

    Event-goers can learn about pollinators, flyers, native plants, cranes, and other nature topics from local groups and individuals. The displays will be open 9 a.m. to noon.

    Some of the presentations will be offered by the Wisconsin Dragonfly Society; Randy Peterson, artist and Monarch enthusiast; Wild Ones; Audubon; Citizens Climate Lobby; Historical Society and many others.

    Guided tours will take place at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. The first walk is to learn about native plants and how to identify them. The second walk is for families to search for dragonflies.

    Nature talk topics include Fond du Lac as a Bird City, dragonflies and damselflies, and the monarch butterfly life cycle.

    Kids can participate in an obstacle course, face painting, arts and crafts, and a monarch butterfly release, set for around noon.

    Thirteen Thursdays series continues with Throwback Stereo

    Thelma’s Thirteen Thursdays Summer Concert Series continues Aug. 1 with Throwback Stereo. The concert begins at 7 p.m. in front of Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts, 51 Sheboygan St.

    Throwback Stereo is a 1990s cover band from the Milwaukee and Chicago area. Band members include Ben Baumann, Merissa Marx, Tim Wright, Joe Howard and Pete Carlson.

    Concerts in this series are free and open to the public. Donations benefiting Thelma will be accepted at the gate.

    Food and drinks will be available to purchase at each concert.

    Eden Firemen’s Picnic features music, food, competition

    The Eden Volunteer Firemen’s Picnic will take place Aug. 2-4 at 211 Fond du Lac Ave., Eden. This fundraising weekend is packed full of music, food and competition.

    The event kicks off Aug. 2 with a fish fry. Kids can participate in a dance clinic and a bean bag tournament. The evening ends with music by local band Driftwood.

    Aug. 3 events include a walk/run, kids’ tractor pull, washer box tournament and the music of Mt. Olive.

    Aug. 4, the day begins with a parade, followed by the band Brent Bel & The Boys.

    All weekend, families can enjoy games, rides and more.

    One Night of Queen to perform free concert at Thelma

    Aug. 3, One Night of Queen will perform a Thelma street concert. For more than 20 years, Gary Mullen and The Works have been performing their world-renowned One Night of Queen live concert.

    Band members include Gary Mullen on vocals, David Brockett on guitar, Malcolm Gentles on keyboards, Jon Halliwell on drums, and Alan McGeoch on bass guitar.

    This concert is also is free and open to the public, with VIP tickets available for $25.

    The VIP section includes portable bathroom access and its own cash bar. Chairs are not permitted in the VIP section. Member discounts will not be available for the VIP tickets for these events, as they are fundraisers. Purchase VIP tickets at thelmaarts.org .

    Fine arts, crafts available during fair at Waupun park

    The Waupun Fine Art and Craft Fair, featuring more than 60 vendors, will run 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 3. It will be held at the West End Park, 200 Beaver Dam St., Waupun.

    Works offered for sale include woodworking, quilts, jewelry, watercolors, metalwork and more. Live entertainment will be under the pavilion throughout the day.
