Chicago daily roundup: Masks here to stay, City Hall vaccine fight with the CPD heats up, Sky win WNBA title, and more

    2021-10-18

(CHICAGO) Welcome to Monday's daily roundup. The sun is shining, the temps are cool, and the Chicago Sky have won their first WNBA title.

The mask mandate continues for Illinois, the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police is still feuding with the mayor over vaccines, and the Logan Square Halloween Parade is back on.

It's time to take a look at some of the top news stories that happened this weekend.

There will be a celebration for the Chicago Sky tomorrow at Millennium Park, but no other details have been announced for the WNBA champions

Let's start off with some good news for the city.

Candace Parker led the Sky to their first WNBA championship title, and the city is celebrating. Mayor Lori Lightfoot has announced there will be a celebration in Millenium Park on Tuesday (mid-morning or afternoon), but further details are still to come at the time of this writing.

Lightfoot had high praise for the team, "When you think about this season, they started 0-7, 0-7, but you could see the seeds of the championship. This is a team that played really tough defense. They just kept at it.”

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot to give COVID-19 update for the city Monday

Chicago can expect an update from the mayor on the Covid crisis this afternoon at 3:30 PM. NBC Chicago is offering a live stream of the mayor's comments.

The city and the state of Illinois remain under mask mandates, with no signs of letting up anytime soon.

Governor J.B. Pritzker said on Thursday he is not ready to talk about lifting the mask mandate. "If you go look at the hospitalizations -- the new hospitalizations, as well as the ones that are, you know, existing in total -- they are not dropping at the rate that they were dropping even a couple of weeks ago. So I'm concerned about that."

Chicago police vaccine mandate: New CPD memo threatens discipline, firing for non-compliance

In other Covid-related news, the mayor remains in a feud with the Chicago Police Department over vaccine requirements. The latest report relates to a second memo distributed to Chicago police officers warning of firings over non-compliance with the city's vaccine policy.

Logan Square’s Halloween Parade returns this weekend after pandemic hiatus

Finally, let's close on something positive. It was off last year due to pandemic restrictions, but the Halloween Parade at Logan Square returns this Sunday, October 17 at 5:30 PM. Families can once again enjoy this popular costumed event.
