The Chicago Botanic Garden had always offered free admission for the public, but the cost of parking was historically steep. In a press release dated Wednesday, February 2nd, the Glencoe attraction announced a new pricing structure for the first time in its history.

It won't be a flat fee, but the rate, with plan-ahead pricing, varies based on the following factors:

    • attendance patterns
    • popular time frames
    • weather

In addition to the price of tickets, which will range from $9.95 to $25.95 per person, is admission to popular attractions including the Grand Tram Tour, Butterflies and Blooms exhibit, and the Model Railroad Garden. Children's tickets will start at $7.95 for kids 3 to 12, and children under age three will remain free.

Harriet Resnick, the Garden’s vice president of visitor experience and business development, said in a press release, “With plan-ahead pricing now in place, we encourage nonmembers to make advance plans and purchases to ensure the best fit for their budget and schedule. The farther in advance they purchase their admission ticket, the more likely they are to save.”

The price for parking has dropped

Parking has been slashed from previous rates of $25 and up to a flat fee of $8. So depending on when you go, and how many people are in your party, you have the potential to save some money.

Of course, if you usually travel by train or bike, these changes won't be welcome news. But according to the Garden, the price changes are necessary in order to, "keep up with increased costs associated with maintaining and sustaining its exceptional gardens, visitor experience, and science and learning programs."

    Where to buy tickets

Visitors can purchase tickets several ways, online on the website, by calling ahead, or on-site.

Will there still be free days?

The Garden will offer 52 free days for Illinois residents throughout the year. You can check out the website for a full list.

What's coming up next at the Garden?

The Orchid Show will be on display starting February 12th until March 27th. The exhibit will feature a colorful array of wild orchids and other tropical plants where visitors can enjoy a break from the Chicago winter in a tropical paradise. Advance tickets are available now.

Its sad that they have to charge now. But with the cost of everything going up, they need to. Labor, supplies, machinery, everything costs more now. Its a beautiful place to go. I will still pay or go one on one of the free days. 52 free days a year. This is no different than going to a museum or planetarium the aquarium.
