What are the top 10 best pizzas in Chicago?

    2022-04-07

This new ranking by the Tasting Table may surprise you.

(CHICAGO) Would you believe a ranking of top pizza joints in Chicago wouldn't include Giordano's or Lou Malnati's?

According to a new ranking by Tasting Table, the following are the top 10 places to grab a pizza in Chicago.

    1. Pequod's, Lincoln Park
    2. Spacca Napoli, Ravenswood
    3. Vito & Nick's, Ashburn
    4. Marcie's Pizza & Liquors, Mayfair
    5. Paulie Gee's: Logan Square, Wicker Park
    6. Piece Brewery and Pizzeria, Wicker Park
    7. Middle Brow Bungalow, Palmer Square
    8. Burt's Place, suburban Morton Grove
    9. Robert's Pizza & Dough Company, Streeterville
    10. Phil's Pizza, Bridgeport

This list of ten mixes things up a bit with different pizza styles. These include Neopolitan, the iconic Chicago deep dish, and also the thin-crust style most Chicagoans typically enjoy when they're not showing out-of-town visitors around the city.

Let's take a look at the first three pizzerias on the list.

    First: Pequod's Pizza

Pequod's Pizza in Lincoln Park ranked first for its deep-dish pizza with its signature caramelized crust and is described by Tasting Table as "positively transcendent."

Pequod's has made other best pizza lists. In 2020, the restaurant was listed second in America for best pizzerias, according to The Daily Meal. Although Chicagoans may wonder if they can truly trust a list that puts a pizzeria from Connecticut as number one.

    Second: Spacca Napoli

Next up on the list is not a Chicago deep dish style pizza, but a Neopolitan one located in Ravenswood. Spacca Napoli has been around for decades, and its pizzas are baked in an oven that came from Naples, Italy.

    Third: Vito & Nick's

Number three is Vito & Nick's, a restaurant that has been serving pizza to Chicagoans since 1946. Vito & Nick's is known for its crispy thin crust and traditional cheese and sausage toppings.

Disagree with this list? Do you think Lou Malnati's or Giordano's deserve a place at the top? Or perhaps you have a different favorite?

You can also check out Chicago Eater's "20 Standout Chicago Pizzerias". Lou Malnati's is first on this list, with Pequod's coming in at the seventh spot. Vito & Nick's showed up last at the 20th spot, and Spacca Napoli was fourth.

As the Tasting Table says, "every Chicagoan has their favorite style of pizza from their favorite restaurant — and maybe multiple favorite styles from multiple favorite restaurants..."
