Your Chicago weekend: 'Markets for Makers' shopping event returns for fall with unique and local items

    2022-10-21

Get a head start on your holiday shopping this year, or browse for yourself at this much-anticipated event featuring one-of-a-kind products made by local entrepreneurs and artists.

Chicago Markets for Makers is back this fall and will take place on Saturday, October 22nd, and Sunday, October 23rd, from 11 AM to 5 PM.

If you're hoping to get an early start on your holiday shopping and maybe find something unique or one-of-a-kind, you may want to head over to the annual eclectic shopping event this weekend.

The event features over 90 artists and makers selling small-batch and one-of-a-kind items, including fashion, art, home decor, food, and more. "Our markets are carefully curated with Makers who create items you can’t easily find in stores," according to the website.

Some local products you will find at the event include pet items from Chicago Dog Co, scents from Deep Field Aromatics, donuts from Oak Park's Dinky Delights, and cards and stationery from Paper Bunny Press.

    How did it all begin?

The market started in 2015 when founder Natalie Christensen first began showcasing curated and diverse items. It's since grown, and the markets are held across the country. In addition to Chicago, you can find the shopping events in Miami, Houston, and Jacksonville, Florida.

Why did Natalie create Markets for Makers?

According to the company website, Natalie was looking to create a unique shopping experience. "In a country full of “cookie-cutter” cities," she said. "Where every city has the same franchises, box stores, and entertainment, I wanted to create something that would break the mold of “Small Town, USA” and help inspire and support Makers, which in turn revitalized local economies."

    What are the details?

    • Location: The market is hosted at the local Artifact Events venue at 4325 N. Ravenswood Avenue in Chicago.
    • When: Doors open this Saturday and Sunday (October 22 and 23) from 11 AM to 5 PM.
    • Cost: General admission starts at $8. VIP tickets are $18. They include VIP access on both days, a dedicated VIP line, and early admission at 10 AM on Saturday. Go here for tickets.
    • Kids are free: Children 11 and under get in free.
    • Pet friendly: Well-behaved pets are allowed.
    • Free tote for VIPs: VIP ticket holders get a special edition cotton market tote.

If you can't make it this weekend, don't despair, the market will return to Chicago on the weekend of November 19th and 20th.
