Controversy stirs on Twitter as Elon Musk takes over and starts firing executives

    2022-10-28

Musk's first tweet since his takeover, "the bird is freed."

Elon Musk's deal to buy Twitter has been an on-again-off-again saga since Musk tried to get out of the deal this summer. In response, Twitter sued him for backing out of the deal.

Now the buying saga is over, and Musk has taken over Twitter. He tweeted Thursday night, "the bird is freed."

He also spent his evening firing top Twitter executives. According to CNN Business, Musk has fired the following people:

    • CEO Parag Agrawal
    • CFO Ned Segal
    • policy head, Vijaya Gadde
    • general counsel, Sean Edgett

What does this mean for Trump?

Will previously banned for-life accounts be reinstated, including former President Donald Trump?

Musk has said he didn't agree with Twitter's ban on Trump. In May, he called it a "morally bad decision."

In a sign pointing to a Trump Twitter return, one of the execs that Musk fired, Vijaya Gadde, played a role in the decision to ban Trump from Twitter in the first place.

And yet, Twitter needs advertisers, who may not want to see a Trump return. The Wall Street Journal reported that ad-buying agencies are receiving requests from clients to halt their ads on Twitter if Trump's account returns.

Musk appeared to try to reassure them in an open letter where he stated, "Twitter obviously cannot become a free-for-all hellscape, where anything can be said with no consequences!"

Musk said he's not here to make money with Twitter

In the open letter to Twitter advertisers, Musk also said, "I didn't do it because it would be easy. I didn't do it to make more money. I did it to try to help humanity, whom I love."

    Twitter employees are worried

According to Reuters, an employee poll taken on the app Blind revealed that less than 10% of Twitter employees expect to keep their jobs in the next three months. It's been rumored that Musk has told prospective investors his plans to fire 75% of the staff.

    What happens next?

We'll have to wait and see. Will Twitter change? Will Trump return? If he does, what would that mean for Trump's troubled social media platform, Truth Social?
