Not surprisingly, the cities with the top 30 most expensive homes in Illinois are all located in the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN-WI metro area.
(CHICAGO) According to Zillow, the average home value in Illinois is $247,384. It's up 2.2% over the past year, and homes are selling fast. The majority are listed as "pending" after being on the market for about seven days.
Although home prices are up overall, some areas in the state are tremendously expensive for real estate.
Thanks to Stacker, we have a list of the top 30 most expensive homes in Illinois. They are all located around the Chicago area. Stacker used data from Zillow to compile the cities with the highest-priced houses.
What's the most expensive city on the list? We're going to take a look at the top five.
#1: Kenilworth - $1,485,408
With the average home priced at nearly $1.5 million, the suburb of Kenilworth on Chicago's North Shore has the most expensive homes in Illinois. And the home values are only rising. They've gone up 5.3% in the last year, and a whopping 30.9% in the past five years.
Kenilworth, located in Cook County, is 15 miles north of downtown Chicago. Bordering Lake Michigan, it's a small, beachside community with a population of about 2,500.
#2: Winnetka - $1,324,052
Winnetka, also located in Cook County, is only 2 miles north of Kenilworth and about a 40-minute drive from downtown Chicago. The home value here is also on the rise. Homes prices have risen 7.1% in the past year and 33.1% in the past five years.
Bordering Lake Michigan on the North Shore, Winnetka is known for tree-lined streets, pristine sandy beaches, and enormous houses.
#3: Glencoe - $1,128,911
Glencoe, another suburb on the North Shore of Lake Michigan is just a way up the road from Winnetka. Its home values have risen 8% in the last year, with a 5-year increase of 36%.
Glencoe is home to the Chicago Botanic Garden, a 385-acre nature center with 27 display gardens in four different natural habitats.
#4: Bannockburn - $974,862
About 30 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, the homes in Bannockburn average just under $1 million. The one-year price increase is 5.3%, and the five-year change is 19.3%.
Bannockburn is a picturesque small village in Lake County that's located only four miles from Lake Michigan. It was previously home to former Bears coach Mike Ditka and former Bulls coach Phil Jackson.
#5: Lake Forest - $944,970
Lake Forest is around 30 miles north of Chicago. Like everywhere in the area, home prices have risen: 6.6% in the past year and 21.8% in the past five years.
A larger city and more well-known than the previous four, Lake Forest borders Lake Michigan and is known for its stunning beaches, unique retail shopping, and fine dining.
What's the most expensive home in Illinois?
The highest-priced residence in the state is located in Chicago in Lincoln Park. The six-bedroom, eleven-bathroom, 25,000-square-foot mansion is currently for sale at the stunning price of $29,999,995.
