Explore Chicago's most expensive house on the market

    2023-11-27

Chicago's most expensive home on the market has been for sale for nearly a year, and its price has been reduced by over 50% from the original asking price.

(CHICAGO) This French-inspired Lincoln Park mansion is currently for sale at $23.5 million. This is down from the original $50 million asking price, and $4 million less than the lowered price from last February.

It's the highest-priced house on the Chicago market, even higher than Michael Jordan's Highland Park mansion, which is still currently for sale.

Is $23.5 million a bargain for a house?

According to Chicago's WGN9 News, the owners spent $65 million, including the cost of the land, to build the property in 2010. If the house sells at this current price, the owners will take a loss of over $40 million.

    Where is the house located?

The mansion is located at 1932 North Burling Street in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago. It's near the corner of Halsted and Armitage, about four miles north of downtown Chicago.

What does $23.5 million get you?

The house, sold by Sotheby's, is 25,000 square feet with six bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, and a massive sized yard at 177 feet by 149 feet, spanning more than eight city lots.

According to the Sotheby's listing, "From the limestone facade with detailed relief work and beautiful balconettes to its lavishly landscaped, private grounds and gardens that include an arbor, a hand-forged pavilion, decorative fountains, and a reflection pool, the exterior is a testament to classic European elegance and artisanship."

Some (but far from all) features of the house include:

    • Media room
    • Game room
    • Sitting room
    • Library
    • Music room
    • 5,000-bottle wine cellar and tasting room (featuring 14-foot ceilings modeled after the Great Stable of Versailles)
    • Formal dining room
    • Private study

But that's not all. The entryway is made with marble that came from the French Pyrenees, and a spiral staircase featuring 22K gold. The entry doors weigh 1,000 pounds and are made of bronze. The ceiling is inlaid with Italian plaster and reliefs, and the millwork includes gilded and French-polished burled walnut.

Finally, the primary suite features a custom dressing room. And if you're feeling a bit peckish while getting dressed, no worries, you can always grab a snack from the refreshment center located within the suite.
