New Laws July 1: Driver's Licenses for Undocumented Migrants, Raises for Tipped Workers, and More

    2024-07-02

Every year, new laws that were passed the prior year go into effect on July 1. In 2024, a number of new laws will begin this Monday. Among them include higher wages for tipped employees, a gas tax increase, and driver's licenses for undocumented immigrants.

See below for some of the biggest changes coming to Chicago this summer.

    Gas Tax Increase

It will cost even more to fill up your gas tank. Starting July 1st, the gas tax increases by two cents to $.047 per gallon (the second highest in the country.) This makes Illinois have the second highest gas tax in the nation, behind only California at $0.60 per gallon.

Chicago Tipped Hospitality Workers Wage Increase

The tipped wage minimum will go up from $9.48 per hour to $11.02 as part of a five-year plan to phase out tipped wages and turn them into standard minimum wage.

Minimum Wage Increase for Chicago and Cook County

The minimum wage for workers in Chicago will now be $16.20 per hour.

    Driver's License for Undocumented Migrants

Undocumented migrants with car insurance, and who have lived in Illinois for at least one year can now apply for a driver's license that replaces the Temporary Visitor Driver's License.

    Sports Betting Tax Increase

The tax is increasing for sports wagering from a 15% flat tax to a 35% progressive rate.

people who aren't here legally should be able to drive here. they are not even supposed to be here. they broke the law coming here, so why should we give them a drivers license to break more laws?,,,
