Fluffy Coke Is the Sugary Drink of the Summer: See Recipe & Origin Story

TikTok's latest beverage craze couldn't be simpler to make. But what is a fluffy Coke? Let's first dive into when it started making the rounds online.

A TikTok Trend

The TikTok obsession can be traced back to a July 6 post from TikToker Emma Grace (@not.eg) and her grandmother Memama making the sugary concoction. "Look how fluffy my coke is. Look at that," says Memama in her southern drawl.

The pair go on to show you how to make a fluffy coke. First line your glass with marshmallow fluff. Next goes in the ice. Finally, pour in the Coke and gently stir with your straw.

If you want frozen bits of marshmallow, simply scrape your straw along the side. As Memama says, when you scrape it with your straw, you can taste the marshmallow.

The Origins of Fluffy Coke Date Back to the 1940s

While the latest trend comes from Emma Grace and Memama on TikTok, Fluffy Coke goes back further than that.

Edible Endy ran an article in 2012 about an ice cream parlor, Indulge, in Fortville, Indiana. In 1948, the original owners, the Heche brothers, created a drink called the marshmallow Coke.

When a Redditor asked how to make the concoction from Indulge, this person commented, "Oooo diabeetus in a cup as I used to call it when I worked in an ice cream shop! We made it with cola and marshmallow fluff. A couple of spoonfuls of fluff, add a little cola and mix, top with cola. It looks like they add some toasted marshmallows as a topping if that picture is an example of how it's served. Now I want a marshmallow coke."

So there you go, Fluffy Cokes have been served up in ice cream shops around the country since at least the 1940s.

1. Spread marshmallow fluff in the glass
2. Add ice.
3. Add Coke.
4. Stir.

Tips for Making a Fluffy Coke

• Don't get marshmallow creme as a replacement, it has different ingredients. You need to find the package that says "marshmallow fluff."
• Scrape the sides and stir to get more of the marshmallow flavor.
• Feel free to use any soda flavor you like.
