Underneath This Maryland City Lies A Creepy Yet Amazing Underground Tunnel System

    2023-10-15

Not many people are aware of the hidden underground tunnels in Baltimore. While life aboveground in the city is bustling with activity, below the surface lies a historical treasure that has long been forgotten. Let's delve into the intriguing history of the catacombs beneath Baltimore's famous Lexington Market.

You've probably heard of or visited Baltimore's renowned Lexington Market. It's a place known for offering some of the finest seafood, baked goods, and various other goods in the Baltimore area.

What many people may not realize is that Lexington Market has a rich history dating back centuries, with its establishment dating all the way back to 1782. Over the years, it has undergone multiple renovations and modernizations. Here's a glimpse of what the market looked like in 1903.

During the construction of the Lexington Market parking garage in 1951, long-forgotten underground vaults were rediscovered. These vaults were originally used to store meat before the invention of refrigeration, as the naturally cooler temperatures beneath the surface helped keep the contents fresh.

Some believe that this underground tunnel system also played a role during Prohibition, where it was used for the production, storage, and transportation of alcohol, especially whiskey.

Beneath the market, there's even an old abandoned night club known as Tubbs. Dust-covered booths and faded signage stand as a testament to what once was.

While exploring these underground wonders may pique your curiosity, it's essential to note that it's not advisable to venture into this area on your own. In the past, tours of the space were available through Baltimore Heritage, but they have yet to resume.

Were you aware of the existence of these underground tunnels in Baltimore? It's a fascinating piece of history waiting to be rediscovered.
