Office supply distributor Essendant Co., based in Illinois, is closing its Anne Arundel County warehouse, resulting in the layoff of 101 workers. The facility, located at 7441 Candlewood Road, will cease operations on May 17. Essendant plans to consolidate its operations into its regional facility in Philadelphia.

This closure is part of Essendant's broader initiative to position the company for future success, according to a company spokesperson. The move aims to improve service efficiency while controlling costs.

Essendant has undergone significant downsizing since its acquisition by Staples Inc. in 2019, shrinking its workforce from 4,700 to 4,000 between 2020 and 2022. The company has announced multiple facility closures across the United States, including in Memphis, Tennessee, Miami, Florida, and Boston, Massachusetts.

In the Greater Baltimore area, Essendant's closure follows similar actions by other distribution companies. Global shipping giants DHL and UPS have closed facilities in the region, and GXO Logistics Inc. shuttered its Aberdeen facility in recent months.

The closure of Essendant's Anne Arundel warehouse underscores the ongoing challenges faced by distribution companies in the current economic landscape.
