Mass Layoffs Continue to Plague Maryland Workforce

    2024-03-27

Layoff Notices Filed in Maryland, Leaving Many Jobless

Layoffs persist in Maryland as another business announces mass layoffs due to plant closures.

According to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, employers with over 100 full-time workers must provide a 60-day notice before laying off 50 or more individuals at a single site. Yesterday, Penn Parking, Inc. University of Maryland, Baltimore filed eight WARN notices with the Maryland Department of Labor, indicating that 57 employees would be laid off. The layoffs affected staff across multiple locations.

    Your Thoughts

Certainly, the increasing number of job losses in Maryland is a cause for concern. Governor Wes Moore and other policymakers should explore strategies to address this issue, such as providing support for affected workers and incentivizing job creation.

While it's tempting to assign blame for these job losses, it's often a complex interplay of economic factors, company decisions, and broader trends.

Engaging in constructive dialogue and proactive measures is key to mitigating the impact of these layoffs and fostering economic resilience.
