7 Maryland Traffic Laws Drivers Commonly Ignore

    1. Slower Traffic Keep Right

    • Maryland law requires drivers traveling slower than the normal speed of traffic to stay in the furthest right-hand lane.
    • This rule also applies if you are driving at least 10 mph below the posted speed limit.
    • Keep right unless passing slower traffic or preparing for a left turn.

    2. Minimum Speed & Flow of Traffic :

    • There is no statewide minimum speed, but you must obey posted minimum speed signs.
    • You cannot drive so slowly that you interfere with the normal flow of traffic.
    • Exceptions include driving slowly due to road conditions or compliance with the law. 21-804

    3. Passing On the Left :

    • You must pass other vehicles on the left and overtake them before moving back to the right.
    • On two-lane roads, ensure the road is clear of oncoming traffic before passing.
    • Do not cut back to the right until you have safely passed the other vehicle. MD Code § 21-303

    4. Following Too Closely

    • Maintain a “reasonable and prudent” distance between your car and the one in front.
    • What is reasonable changes based on weather, traffic, and the other car’s speed. MD Code § 21-310

    5. Mobile Phones & Hands-Free Driving

    • It is illegal to read, write, or type a text message or email while driving.
    • Drivers under 18 cannot use a cell phone at all, except to call 911.
    • Exceptions exist for GPS and emergency services. MD Code § 21-1124

    6. Four-Way Intersections & Stop Signs

    • At a four-way intersection, the driver on the right has the right-of-way if both arrive simultaneously.
    • The driver on the left must yield to the driver on the right. MD Code § 21-401

    7. Left Turns & Right of Way

    • Yield to oncoming traffic before making a left turn if it poses an immediate danger.
    • Proceed with the turn only after allowing other vehicles to pass. MD Code § 21-402

Think about these seven Maryland traffic laws the next time you head out on the road. Following these rules will help you avoid tickets and accidents. Remember, the rules of the road help keep all drivers safe.
