While other award shows tend to be black tie and attendees lean into more elegant red carpet choices, the VMAs have always been a moment for edgier more fun and playful looks—and the stars took that to heart this year.

Halle Bailey found the perfect middle ground between formal and sexy. She wore a deep red strapless midi dress that hit right around her ankles with some fringe revealing a pair of sexy and playful red strappy sandals. The dress also had a slight cut off by her hip, giving it a more flirty appeal.

Tate McRae seemingly paid tribute to an iconic Britney Spears look wearing a lace mini dress similar to the one the “Lucky” singer wore to the 2001 VMAs. McRae paired her look with a pai of opened toe patent leather black heels, while Spears wore high heeled sandals with hers.

Sabrina Carpenter arrived on the black carpet giving major old Hollywood energy. The singer arrived in a full all-white ensemble, wearing a gown worn by Madonna to the 1991 Oscars. She updated the look with a pair of Giuseppe Zanotti Tarifa white leather open toe platform sandals.

Paris channeled the early 2000s in a silver, metallic dress and giant choker with sparkly Dolce & Gabbana slingback heels.
