Monday, September 2, 2024, marks the 130th time that Labor Day has been celebrated in the United States. Since 1894 the American worker has been celebrated for their contributions to our nation and our economy. You will be happy to know that Oregon was the first state to make Labor Day a legal holiday in 1887. The first Monday in September was chosen to honor workers because it was neutral compared to May Day when the rest of the world celebrates and its connection with communism. Also, it bridged the long gap without a holiday between Independence Day and Thanksgiving. President Grover Cleveland made Labor Day a federal holiday in 1894.

Labor Day is the unofficial end to summer, after the long weekend, kids are back to school. This makes Labor Day weekend bad for traffic as people are trying to squeeze out the last of summer fun before the long school year. Although Christmas and Thanksgiving are the busiest times to fly, Labor Day also sees a high volume of travelers.

The good news is that the NFL’s first game happens the same week on Thursday, September 5 but college games started a week and a half earlier. Labor Day sales are a yearly occurrence as well, with large ticket items like washers and mattresses marked down. And don’t forget to put away those white shoes!

Scotties wishes you a happy Labor Day and call on us for any car care needs.
