Another good week that just fell short of great for the Hops who won four-of-six games with Everett, dropping the series finale in extra innings Sunday afternoon.

In the wake of their four wins, Hillsboro sits eight games back of first place Spokane in the NWL’s second half standings, gaining just a game this past week.

Gino Groover led the Hops over the week and continues to work his way back from more than two months away due to injury, batting .313 with two home runs in five games.

Jack Hurley played all six games for the Hops, batting .304, while new Hop, Jackson Feltner, who joined the team from Single-A Visalia on Aug. 6, had seven hits, a home run and six RBI over the course of the series.

While Hillsboro starting pitchers were relatively solid, led by Jose Cabrera who allowed two earned runs in seven innings, Hops reliever Listher Sosa was lights out in his two appearances, allowing one hit while striking out seven in six shutout innings.

The Hops travel to Eugene this week for six games against the rival Emeralds.

Organizational news and notes…Former Hop Tommy Henry struck out 12 in a start this past week for Triple-A Reno…Former Hop and first round pick Pavin Smith hit .348 with two home runs and eight RBI over six games with Reno…catcher Caleb Roberts hit .353 with a home run and seven RBI over five games in Double-A Amarillo this past week…Yu-Min Lin allowed just three hits in seven shutout innings in a start with Amarillo this past week…Spencer Giesting allowed one earned run on four hits in seven innings with Amarillo…Adonys Perez struck out six in six shutout innings with Single-A Visalia…Former Hops Corbin Carroll and Jake McCarthy combined to go 15-for-42 with six home runs and 18 RBI in six games with the Diamondbacks…

Below are the recaps from last week’s Hops games:

    Aug. 6 — Hillsboro 7, Everett 3

Merril Kelly started the game, but it was the Hops bullpen that finished and ultimately won their game with Everett, 7-3, in their series opener on Tuesday, Aug. 6, at Hillsboro Ballpark.

Kelly, who was making a rehab start after returning from the Diamondbacks’ 60-day injured list, allowed three earned runs on six hits over four innings. Hillsboro’s bullpen, however, was nails, allowing no hits while striking out six and walking one over five shutout innings.

Listher Sosa did the bulk of the work, throwing three innings and earning the win in relief of Kelly and striking out three, in three hitless and shutout innings.

The AquaSox scored a first-inning run and went ahead 3-1 in the top half of the third, but watched the Hops match their two third-inning runs, then score two more in the fifth and one apiece in both the sixth and seventh innings en route to the win.

Gino Groover homered twice for Hillsboro and finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs-scored.

Christian Cerda also homered and was 2-for-4, joining Groover, Gavin Conticello, Juan Franco and Jackson Feltner with multiple hits in the game.

Feltner was playing his first game for the Hops after being called up from Single-A Visalia, and finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run-scored.

    Aug. 7 — Hillsboro 3, Everett 2

Despite just four hits, the Hops made the most of each and every one en route to a 3-2 extra inning win over Everett on Wednesday night, Aug. 7, at Hillsboro Ballpark.

Manuel Pena homered to tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first, then again tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the seventh before scoring the winning run on a fielder’s choice in the bottom half of the 10th.

Pena finished 1-for-4, driving in two and scoring one.

The Hops were a dismal 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

In addition to Pena, this game was about Hillsboro pitching which included seven strong innings from starter Jose Cabrera, along with three dominant innings from relivers Yordin Chalas and Alfred Morillo.

Morillo earned the win, and combined with Chalas to strikeout seven AquaSox batters in their three hitless innings.

Everett’s pitching was equally impressive, allowing just the four hits and striking out 10, but issued six free passes over the game’s 10 innings.

The win was the second straight for the Hops who’ve now won seven of their last 10 games and remain eight games behind first place Spokane.

    Aug. 8—Hillsboro 6, Everett 5

The Hops scored six early runs, then held on in a 6-5 win over Everett on Thursday, Aug. 8, at Hillsboro Ballpark.

Hillsboro got a run in both the first and second innings, then scored four runs to take a 6-3 lead in the fourth inning.

Kevin Sim went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs-scored, and was joined in the multi-hit parade by Jack Hurley and Manuel Pena who combined to go 5-for-8 with one RBI and two runs-scored.

Jackson Feltner also homered for Hillsboro, his first since joining the Hops from Single -A Visalia to start the week.

Avery Short got the win for the Hops, throwing five innings and allowing three earned runs on six hits.

Hillsboro got all of their runs off of Everett starter Marcelo Perez who threw just 2.2 innings, but tallied just three hits off of four AquaSox relievers over the game’s final 5.1 innings.

Everett scored two runs in the seventh inning off of Hops reliever Eli Saul to pull within a run, but were shutdown over the final two innings by Philip Abner and Zane Russell who struck out three, allowing no hits.

Lazaro Montes led the Sox, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and run-scored.

The win was Hillsboro’s third in a row and helped them pull within seven games of first place Spokane.

    Aug. 9 — Everett 8, Hillsboro 2

Following three consecutive Hops wins to open the series, I guess it was just Everett’s time.

The AquaSox seven runs over the game’s first four innings en route to an 8-2 win on Friday night, Aug. 9, at Hillsboro Ballpark.

Everett lead-off hitter Michael Arroyo homered in the game’s opening at-bat, and from there the visiting Sox roughed up Hillsboro starting pitcher Roman Angelo, ushering the righthander from the game after allowing four earned runs over just 1.2 innings.

To the contrary, Everett starting pitcher Shaddon Peavyhouse was in control for much of the night, throwing seven innings and allowing two earned runs over seven innings of work.

Arroyo finished 3-for-5 with his homer, two RBI and three runs-scored.

Bill Knight added a home run for the Sox as well.

Jack Hurley had three hits for Hillsboro, while new Hop Jackson Feltner continued his hot hitting since arriving in Hillsboro Aug. 6, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Feltner is 6-for-17 with a home run and five RBI since joining Hillsboro.

    Aug. 10 — Hillsboro 5, Everett 4

It’s not something you see every day, but fans saw it Saturday night when the Hops’ Gavin Logan drew a walk in the bottom of the 10th inning for the game-winning run, leading Hillsboro over Everett 5-4 on Aug. 10, at Hillsboro Ballpark.

It was a game of comebacks, as Everett tied the game then took the lead with two runs in the top of the ninth, then watched the Hops tie it 3-3 with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning before getting the extra inning win.

Jackson Feltner continued his hot week, coming through with a game-tying RBI-double with two outs in the ninth.

Logan’s extra inning walk came after Hillsboro had tied the game on a Jack Hurley single that scored Kevin Sim.

Gino Groover, Jack Hurley, Gavin Conticello and Tommy Troy all had two hits for Hillsboro.

Michael Arroyo and Bill Knight had three hits apiece for Everett.

Jacob Steinmetz started the game on the mound for the Hops, allowing one earned run in five innings.

Listher Sosa was impressive in relief, allowing just a single hit while striking out four in three innings of work.

The win was the fourth in five games for Hillsboro against Everett this week.

    Aug. 11 — Everett 7, Hillsboro 4

It was feast to famine for the Hops who, after tying the game in the ninth, fell to Everett in extra innings, 7-4, on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 11, at Hillsboro Ballpark.

The AquaSox’ Colt Emerson doubled in what amounted to the game winner in the 10th inning, and Josh Hood and Caleb Cali followed with run-scoring singles to add to what became a three-run Everett win.

Cali finished with three hits for the Sox, while Emerson and Connor Charping notched two apiece.

Hillsboro was led by Gavin Conticello who was 2-for-3 with a home run, triple, two RBI and two runs scored.

Conticello had a chance to end the game with two outs and a man on first in the bottom of the ninth, following Kevin Sim scoring the tying run on a Juan Corniel fielder’s choice, but flew out to center field to end the threat.

Logan Clayton started the game on the mound for Hillsboro and allowed two earned runs in four innings.
