    Sports Briefs - Thursday, Feb. 8

    The Ranger girls hockey team stomped Duluth 8-2 in their final game of the year on Feb. 1.

    As the regular season ends, the girls prepared for the first round of the Section 7AA tournament at No. 4 seeded Anoka on Thursday, Feb. 8. With a win, the squad will advance to the Section 7AA semifinals to play the winner of a first-round matchup between No. 1-Andover or No. 8-Duluth.

    Boys basketball

    The Forest Lake boys basketball team picked up a road win against a conference opponent in White Bear Lake on Tuesday, Jan. 30, by a final score of 72-60. Two days later on Thursday, Feb. 1, the Rangers won yet again versus Stillwater on the road by a final score of 69-65. The third road game in a span of five days, the Rangers claimed an 81-56 victory over Cambridge-Isanti. The boys took on their next opponent at home – the Andover Huskies on Tuesday, Feb. 6, in a contest that was not completed at press time.

    Boys swim/dive

    The Forest Lake boys swim and dive team hosted an SEC matchup with the East Ridge Raptors on Thursday, Feb. 1, and lost by a final score of 97-84. The boys had another conference meet at home versus Roseville on Thursday, Feb. 8, in a contest that was not completed at press time.

    Wrestling

    The Forest Lake boys wrestling team hosted a dual matchup with Cretin-Derham Hall on Friday, Feb. 2, and picked up the 54-14 landslide victory.

    The Rangers then participated in the Blaine duals on Saturday, Feb. 3. Forest Lake beat Elk River 46-2 en route to defeating Blaine , then thrashed Coon Rapids 45-19 to wrap up the day 3-0.

    On the girls side, the squad went on the road to Eau Claire North High School on Saturday, Feb. 3. The Rangers were outright first-place winners with a final score of 297 in a huge team win over 25 teams – 91 points ahead of the next highest finishing team from Mora.

    The Rangers now prepare for the section qualifying tournament at Bemidji High School this weekend.

    Nordic ski

    Junior Norah Hushagen captured second place at the SEC championships at Battle Creek Regional Park on Wednesday, Jan. 31, while junior Jonas Hebert claimed the Rangers top spot on the boys side at fifth place. Senior Chloe Erickson also took fifth on the girls side, with Madelein Bonnett captured the final slot in the top 10 out of 42 competitors.

    In the boys varsity relay, senior Braden Anderson and eighth-grader Jack Hushagen took fifth, bringing up the team score to 420.

    In the girls tandem sprint, sophomore Elsa Swenson and junior Clara Zak took fifth in the relay, bringing the team score up to a 437 and good for third place overall as a team.

    Both the boys and girls teams now prepare for sections, held on Wednesday, Feb. 7 at Battle Creek.

    Alpine ski

    The Forest Lake Alpine ski team took part in its final invitational at Afton Alps on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

    The girls team placed second out of 10 teams at the invite, finishing with a team score of 566 points – 98 points behind the first-place team from Stillwater and 31 points ahead of the third-place team in East Ridge. On the boys side, the team also claimed a second-place finish behind Stillwater. The boys accumulated 595 points across all events, narrowly beating White Bear Lake’s push for second, as they finished 4 points ahead of their rivals.

    Both teams competed at the section race at Giants Ridge in Biwabik, Minnesota, on Tuesday, Feb. 6, in a contest that was not completed at press time.
