    Sports Briefs - April 24, 2024

    The Forest Lake boys baseball team started out its season in unique fashion in a 3-3 tie against Cretin-Derham Hall on Wednesday, April 10, as the game couldn’t be decided during the extra innings period. The boys then shifted their focus to the Woodbury Royals, where the squad suffered its first loss of the year on Friday, April 12, by a close 4-3 final score in the team’s home opener at Schumacher Field.

    On Monday, April 15, the Rangers secured its first win of the season, earning the narrow 1-0 victory at Irondale. In a conference rivalry game, the boys then played host to White Bear Lake on Saturday, April 20, when the squad lost 6-2 in extra innings. The Rangers then hosted another tight matchup with the Stillwater Ponies on Monday, April 22, and lost that contest by a final score of 1-0.

    Girls softball

    The Forest Lake girls softball team won its first two regular season games of the year against Cottage Grove and Woodbury, respectively, by an overall score of 28-4 between the two matchups. The girls then suffered their first loss of the season to one of the top teams in the state by way of Cretin-Derham Hall in a final score of 12-2 on Wednesday, April 10.

    Two days later, the Rangers got back to their winning ways by defeating Stillwater on the road 6-3 before shutting out Mounds View 17-0. The girls kept the pedal to the metal on the road by routing Irondale 15-5 on Wednesday, April 17, and continued that trend by stomping the Roseville Raiders by a final score of 13-3 on Monday, April 22. The girls are now at a comfortable 6-1 record on the year. The team faced off against White Bear Lake on Tuesday, April 23 in a game not completed at press time.

    Boys lacrosse

    The Forest Lake boys lacrosse team kicked off the season with an 8-6 loss at home to a co-op team in Hopkins/St. Louis Park on Saturday, April 13. The following week on Wednesday, April 17, the Rangers fell to SEC opponent East Ridge by a final score of 12-4, before dropping their third game on Friday, April 19, to Cretin-Derham Hall on a final score of 11-5.

    The Rangers played Park of Cottage Grove on Wednesday, April 24, in a game not completed by press time.

    Boys tennis

    The Forest Lake boys tennis team began its season with a 6-1 loss to Blaine on Saturday, April 13. Senior Frank Kerkow was the lone Ranger to earn a win on the day in the singles format, defeating his Bengal opponent in two sets, as the doubles lineup was unable to snag any wins. In the following week, the Rangers won back-to-back meets over Grand Rapids and Duluth East by final scores of 7-0 and 6-1, respectively. Against the Greyhounds, the Rangers’ singles lineup swept their competition, en route to winning two of the three aspects in the doubles format to secure Forest Lake’s second team win of the year. The boys then lost a 4-3 nail-biter to Stillwater on Thursday, April 18.

    The squad then squared up with Centennial at home on Monday, April 22, and came away with another convincing 6-1 win. The Rangers are now 3-2 on the season.

    Track and field

    The Forest Lake boys track and field team competed in the Stillwater Pony Relays meet on Saturday, April 20, at Stillwater Area High School, where a variety of runners earned place finishes. In the 3,200-meter finals, junior Caleb Saari wound up at 20 out of 32 total finishers, securing a time of 11:13.50. As a 4x100 shuttle and hurdle relay team, the boys placed third overall behind Cambridge-Isanti and ahead of Mounds View.

    In the discus finals, sophomore Howie Johnson earned eighth place after a mark of 128-01, while senior Mason Stebleton came in at 22 after throwing a mark of 112-05. Johnson ultimately won the shot put finals with an impressive result of 50-01. Both girl and boys teams faced off at Roseville Area High School on Tuesday, April 23 after press time.
