The Forest Lake track and field teams had 19 individuals earn a Class AAA state berth following the Section 7AAA championship races on Wednesday, May 29 on home turf. On the girls side, junior Savana Sanchez took the section title in the 100m race, earning a time of 12.55 in the finals. Her 12.50 prelim time landed her at number three in Forest Lake school history, while also taking second in the long jump with a new personal record of 17-9.75, also good for another third place in Ranger history.

Junior Norah Hushagen qualified for state in both the 1600m and 3200m, taking first in both events, setting new personal bests as well with a 4:49.42 in the 1600m–good for second all-time–while running a 10:44.95 in the 3200m, improving her mark to third all-time.

The 4x800 relay team consisting of Arielle DeYoung, Aaliyah Rodgers, Anna VanAcker and Lucy Saari took second place and broke the school’s record, last set in 2021, with a 9:24.87.

The girls 4x100 relay crew also qualified for state by running a season best time for a second-place finish, consisting of Amelia Bonnett, Sanchez, Kayla Miles and Summer Borsheim.

In the field events, Alexis Fahey came out on top in the discus and shotput events, good for a state berth. Miles and Elly Stamp round out the last couple of girls who surpassed state qualifications, with both competing in the pole vault.

On the boys side, Reid Olson clinched a state berth by taking second-place in the 110m hurdles, as well as taking second in the 300m hurdles. James McCardle, a freshman, punched his first ticket to the state tournament by grabbing second in the 800m finals with a time of 1:58.84.

The 4x100m relay team, consisting of Mark Jurkovich, Grant Neururer, Sam Cordie and Cam Mata, will also compete at state–earning second place in 43.12–just half a second behind Blaine in first place. Mata also took second in the long jump with a 21-05.50 mark. Howie Johnson, the sophomore, will compete at the state discus and shotput events following a third place finish in discus and a first place finish in the shot put. - by Trenton Reynolds
