Fire burns 7 acres near Clear Lake
A forest fire broke out in the swamp area northwest of Clear Lake the morning of Tuesday, June 20 after an area resident dumped coals from the previous night’s fire into the swamp. Though it’s a typical practice for the area, said Fire Chief Al Newman, it caught fire due to the drought conditions (this part of Washington County and surrounding area are under a moderate drought). Flames reached 30 feet high at times and firefighters had to wade through the swamp with backpacks of water. The labor-intensive fire was the reason the city called on Wyoming, Scandia, Hugo, Lino Lakes, and Stacy fire departments for assistance. The Minnesota DNR’s fire team was still on-site at press time on Tuesday afternoon, and was expected to be so through the evening, for continued fire control. Two firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion on-site, but there were no injuries reported.
State funding helps Forest Lake with more than $10 million in projects
It was a plaque without a home that began the spark for a veterans memorial at Lakeside Memorial Park. The plaque memorializing 24 names of Vietnam veterans from the area who died was placed on a rock in the 1970s. When the new Lakeside Memorial Park was built in the early 2000s, the plaque was taken off the rock – which had moved – and it sat in the park without a home for close to two years. In 2008 El Ewert, a World War II veteran, decided to do something about it. ...
