Girls excel at invitational
The Forest Lake Rangers boys and girls cross country teams participated in the Gold 5K at the University of Minnesota Roy Griak Invitational on Friday, Sept. 23. The boys placed 54th out of 55 squads while the girls squad finished 13th out of 53 squads. Freshman Sam McCafferty (18:38.9) finished in 317th while sophomore Grady Miklya (18:57.5) finished 361, out of 525 runners. For the girls, sophomore Norah Hushagen (19:02.2), senior Ellie Hanowski (20:24.2) and eighth grader Molly McCarthy (20.39.8) finished 12, 66 and 81, respectively, out of 476 runners. The Rangers are scheduled to participate in the St.Michael-Albertville Cross Country Invite on Monday, Oct. 3.

Volleyball splits week’s games
The Forest Lake Rangers volleyball team (6-3) broke even last week. The team began the week Tuesday, Sept. 13, with a loss to Andover in five sets before responding with a win Thursday, Sept. 15, against North Branch in three sets. Senior Madison Messingham served 12 points and contributed 13 digs while junior Katie Brandl had 40 set assists against Andover. Senior Kaysie Bakke led the team with 15 kills and 16 digs. Senior Bethany Weiss and junior Maddie Muellner finished the game with a combined 25 kills. Against North Branch, Bakke led the team with a .355 kill efficiency while also adding 14 kills in the process. Brandl had 27 assists, and Weiss had 11 kills.

Ranger football goes 2-0
After winning their season opener, the Forest Lake Rangers football team overcame a 16-point deficit Thursday, Sept. 8, at Anoka en route to their second win of the season. Down 29-13 in the third quarter, the Rangers scored three straight touchdowns to take the lead. Forest Lake held on defensively in the final couple minutes, clinching the game with the Tornadoes’ failed attempt in Rangers territory on fourth down. Unlike the season opener, when Forest Lake scored three passing touchdowns, the Rangers took advantage of the ground game, scoring five rushing touchdowns. Senior Westin Hoyt collected his first rushing touchdown of the season, with three touchdown overall. Junior Leyton Patzer stole the spotlight, running 163 yards on 27 carries for three touchdowns. The undefeated Rangers, who currently hold the top spot in the Metro Maroon North, look to continue their success Friday, Sept. 16, at Forest Lake Area High School in a conference game against Osseo.
