FIRST ALERT: Excessive heat, humidity expected Thursday!
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Dangerous heat and humidity will carry over into the first day of August! Heat index values were kept relatively lower on Wednesday due to the periodic cloud cover and isolated gusty storms, mainly along and south of the I-26 corridor. We’ll stay on the quiet side tonight, but overnight lows will only fall into the 70s across the region. With only high clouds expected for much of Thursday morning, expect a fast rise in temperatures through the late morning and afternoon hours. Conditions are forecast to turn towards dangerous levels beginning around lunchtime as many locations away from the coast should climb into the mid to upper-90s. With humidity increasing slightly, widespread heat index values will reach at least 110° for at least two consecutive hours. There is an increasing risk of higher heat index values, especially in the Tri-County and Colleton County; an Excessive Heat Watch is in effect from 12 PM to 8 PM Thursday for these locations for the likelihood of values between 113-115°. Meanwhile, a Heat Advisory is in effect for Williamsburg and Georgetown Counties. With Thursday being the first day of school for the aforementioned counties, make sure that you and your children limit time spent outdoors, and stay hydrated.
