Die-hard begs Rangers to honor Sam Rosen with this power-play plan

Sam Rosen, the irreplaceable voice of the Rangers for 40years, announced on Wednesday that the 2024-25 season would be his last behind the mic. Fans are already looking for unique ways to honor Rosen’s legacy and impact on the organization for his final year with the team.

One superfan made a suggestion that’s been gaining traction online – Madison Square Garden should play Rosen’s iconic “It’s a power-play goal!” line over the loudspeaker after every Rangers goal on the man advantage this season.

It’s an idea that’s been similarly executed by the New York Yankees this season after 35 years of John Sterling’s vibrant play-by-play radio commentary on WFAN. Yankee Stadium plays his archetypal “Theeeee Yankees win!” call following every home victory before Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” caps the celebration.

Rosen’s classic power-play goal call originated in the 1987-88 season when the Rangers led the league with 111 power-play goals that year. Oddly, it was the only season in the 1980s that the Rangers missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Fans are hoping the Hockey Hall of Famer and 2016 Foster Hewitt Award-winning broadcaster will have plenty of opportunities to make that call after the Rangers were third in the NHL last season, converting at a 26.42 percent rate.

While the 77-year-old’s crowning achievement is being the voice of the 1993-94 Stanley Cup champion Rangers team, the best sendoff would be a second championship in his final season. The waiting is over – this iteration of the team has the talent to win it all.

How sweet would it be to “do it for Sam”?

Other possibilities include a banner-raising ceremony in Madison Square Garden for his long-tenured service to the team.

If Harry Styles can have his name in the rafters for playing 15 consecutive nights at The Garden, shouldn’t Rosen get a banner for his long Rangers tenure? Both Styles and Rosen have incredible voices, of course!

Fans excitedly await Rosen’s final body of work when the Rangers kick off the 2024-25 season against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Oct. 9.
