JEFFERSON — The Generals grabbed the lead with a three-run rally in the first inning, then held on tight as the Blue Devils charged back late in the game.

Fort Atkinson withstood four eighth-inning runs from Jefferson to earn a 6-5 victory at Fischer Field in Home Talent League baseball action on Sunday.

The Generals engineered a two-out rally against Jefferson starter Ike Roth in the first. Branden Zastrow walked and went first to third on Jake Hansen’s single. Cam Wolter followed with a run-scoring infield hit and Conner Kienbaum capped the proceedings by finding green grass in center for a two-run single.

Josh Crandall doubled to open the Fort third and scored on Hansen’s ground ball to second base.

With two away in the fifth, Kienbaum delivered again, doubling home a pair on a knock to left field that upped the Generals’ cushion to 6-0.

Facing starter Austin Paul in the seventh, the Blue Devils got on the board when Aidan Kammer doubled to center with one away. Kammer came around when Thomas Schlesner singled to third base, where Crandall was charged with an error on the play, allowing both runners to move up.

Kroix Kucken relieved Paul to start the eighth and immediately found himself in a bases-loaded no-out jam thanks to walks issued to Caysen Miller and Luis Serrano sandwiched around Haygen Miller’s single.

Reese Fetherston grounded out to bring a run across and Roby Schlesner followed with an RBI single to make it a 6-3 game. After Serrano scored on a wild pitch, Kammer lined a single to center for his third hit of the game, plating pinch runner Andrew Altermatt to cut the margin to 6-5.

Kucken retired Thomas Schlesner on a ground out, which moved Kammer to third, before Brandon Laesch flew out to center.

Crandall then pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to close it out.

Kienbaum had three hits and four RBIs for Fort while Crandall and Wolter added two hits apiece.

Paul pitched seven innings of four-hit ball, allowing an unearned run in the win. He struck out three and walked none.

Roth allowed six runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings in the loss before being relieved by Tyler Fredrick, who tossed 4 1/3 innings of four-hit ball.

The Generals, winners of four straight, improved to 7-4 overall and 5-2 in division games. The Blue Devils drop to 8-4 overall and 4-3 in division games with two weeks remaining in the regular season. Cambridge (9-1, 5-1) remains atop the Southeast North Division standings.

Next Sunday at 1 p.m., Jefferson plays at Evansville and Fort travels to face Stoughton.
