Music, art will fill weekend
Lovers of live music and art will find plenty of both over the Labor Day weekend in Silver City, as the annual Carnitas Musica y Mas Fiesta and the Red Dot Studio Tour return. Carnitas Musica y Mas will bring three days of music to Gough Park starting Friday evening. Entry into the fiesta grounds is $7 per day or $15 for all three days. The fiesta will include food vendors, a beer garden and dance contests.
- Silver City Pride event set for September
LGBTQ Grant County will stage an inclusive, intergenerational Pride festival that celebrates the best of Silver City on Friday, Sept. 20, and Saturday, Sept. 21. On Friday, Sept. 20, from 5-8 p.m., the Pride weekend kicks off with a special Pride Dance in Gough Park, 1200 N. Pope St., hosted by DJ Robbie Rob.

During the Town of Silver City Regular Council Meeting, Councilor Bencomo provided an update on the Grant County Safety Lighting Project. The New Mexico Department of Transportation plans to enhance safety by installing additional lighting along Highway 180, extending from 14th Street to Santa Clara. The project will also include new signage to help manage speed limits, improved road striping, and the installation of flashing speed radar detectors. Notably, some of the lighting upgrades will be placed at key intersections, starting from Delk Drive and continuing toward Santa Clara. The improvements are expected to take place later this year.

In observance of International Overdose Awareness Day and to raise awareness about the addiction crisis in America, Silver Regional Sexual Assault Support Services will host a screening of “Untreated and Unheard: The Addiction Crisis in America” on Saturday, August 31st from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Silco Theatre in Silver City. Following the film, there will be a panel discussion to address questions and interact with the audience. This event is free and open to the public.
